Sammy Hagar sent Eddie Van Halen birthday greetings to Eddie Van Halen via Twitter over a year ago, and got nothing back... so you may guess the age-old question of a “Van Hagar” reunion is as dead as ever.

Hagar, currently reunited with his group Chickenfoot, has confirmed to Billboard he sees little chance of it ever happening.

“Let’s put it like this,” he says in a new interview with the magazine. “When it came to my birthday, I didn’t get a message, so obviously that camp, him and Al [drummer Alex Van Halen], still have some kind of trip against me.

“I’m certainly not looking to get back in that band when I’ve got Chickenfoot sitting in my lap, and I’m scared to grab the reigns of that one. Van Halen would be twice the nightmare of the workload and the anxieties about getting along or being worried about being stabbed in the back again or something. I don’t want to put myself in that situation, that’s for sure.”

But! Wait! Hagar also throws down the biggest gauntlet in rock reunion history (maybe!), if EVH does want to talk seriously about touring together again. He wants bassist Michael Anthony back. And, get this, he wants Dave Lee Roth too so the two frontmen can trade off songs in a VH mk I vs VH mk II throwdown!

“That’s really the only way I would be interested in a Van Halen reunion,” Hagar says. “Everybody’s saying, ‘Well, what would it take?’” Hagar says. “For me, no money, man. I don’t need money. I would do that for the fans and give the money to food banks or something. I’m not sure anybody else would agree with me, but that would interest me enough to sit down across the table from everybody and work that one out.”

Smart. As Hagar surely knows this will never happen. Or will it? It would mean Eddie leaving current bassist, his son, Wolfgang, at home.

But do you agree with Sammy? Would you pay to see Roth and Hagar dual-fronting the old Van Halen? It would like the Best of Both Worlds compilation album in the flesh. Maybe they could call it Van Halen V?
