If you happened to purchase the 2004 Legacy Edition of Johnny Winter’s classic Second Winter, you were no doubt captivated by the package’s bonus disc—a remarkable live performance recorded in April of 1970 at London’s Royal Albert Hall that features the Gibson legend at his incendiary best. (So good, in fact, it might today endure as a classic had it seen release in its own time.) Now get ready for more.

Winter has agreed to begin releasing some of his choice archived material in a multi-album deal with Friday Music, which next month will release Live Bootleg Series, Vol. I. This first installment consists of a scorching early-1970s performance, and it hits the streets on October 9. Song selections include “Messin’ with the Kid,” “Come on in My Kitchen,” “Jumpin’ Jack Flash,” and a rocked-out take of “It’s All Over Now,” which is a staple in Winter’s current live repertoire. And aside from the spectacular fretboard action, Gibson aficionados will surely appreciate the CD’s cover image: Johnny’s workhorse Gibson Firebird. —Sean McDevitt
