British Guitar Pioneer Dies
British session guitarist, Big Jim Sullivan, has died. He was 71.
James George Tomkins, better known as Big Jim Sullivan played guitar on well over 1000 charted singles in the U.K.
His career started at the famous 2i's Coffee Bar in London in the ‘50s where he teamed up with pop star Marty Wilde who gave Jim a 1955 Les Paul Goldtop that Marty had bought from Sister Rosetta Tharpe. It was the first Les Paul to ever be played in the U.K.
In the late ‘60s Big Jim Sullivan took up the sitar and recorded an album of rock classics on the Indian instrument.
