Arlen Roth

Last night was a truly uplifting gig for my daughter Lexie and me, and it was the kind of show that everyone should truly experience! There were several acts before us, and the talent and the level of musicianship was just incredible. The performers were mostly singer/songwriters, and there were many great players, but the whole thing seemed to be elevated by each act as they followed each other! By the time we finally hit the stage, we were totally excited to be a part of this show (we were crabby in the beginning), and we were so into it… we played about 15 songs, and totally rocked the house!

The most pleasurable part for me was that we had other great singers and players who were also part of our show and there was so much interaction and spontaneity between us. It was just unreal! True musicianship on full, natural display, and at its best! To make this point, imagine that I was playing with the great Mara Carlyle from the U.K., who is a great singer and was also playing, of all things, the SAW! She was bowing it like a violin, and the sounds were amazing. Before we were done with the first song, I was actually playing high volume swells on the guitar that were harmonizing with her!

The sound was thankfully very good, and we all had a fabulous time! Afterwards, we had fresh oysters opened up by one of the singers on the bill, in true Martha’s Vineyard style. I was in shock that anyone who was just playing the guitar would then take a primitive knife and open those clams with such precision! If I break a nail, I’m finished!!

But once again, just great to report to you all that last night was another fantastically creative time of music, and the hits just keep on coming! There’s nothing like making beautiful music with my daughter, and the combined feeling of pride and just of sheer love that occurs at times like this can never really be put into words… Guess we’ll just have to let the music speak for us!’s Arlen Roth, affectionately known The King of All Guitar Teachers, is music lesson pioneer and the quintessential guitarist. An accomplished and brilliant musician — and one of the very few who can honestly say he’s done it all — Roth has, over the course of his celebrated 35-year career, played on the world’s grandest stages, accompanied many of the greatest figures in modern music and revolutionized the concept of teaching guitar.
