Co-creators Michael Schulster—a tap-dancing/rock and roll prodigy from New York—and Joel Hanna—a champion Irish step-dancing martial artist from Vancouver—have drawn upon their shared affinity for unifying dance with other art forms to create Revolution, a fresh, sexy and electrifying new show making its New York debut at The Joyce Theater. Accompanied by a live rock band on stage, including five sets of Slingerland drums, Revolution features a powerhouse ensemble of talented young dancers through its fusion of tap, jazz, tango, and martial arts, including: a finalist from Season Two of So You Think You Can Dance (Allison Holker); Broadway’s 42nd Street (Mike Warshaw); a prized ballerina from Boston (Krista Montrone); and Tap Dogs (Jimmy Guasto).

Revolution comes at a time when dance has been increasingly popularized by television, yet the general public—not just studio audiences in Los Angeles—has yet to experience a live performance that feeds upon this popularity and inspires at the same time. It represents a conscious creative decision in the minds of Schulster and Hanna to bring new light to the music of their generation and generate new audiences for tap dance.

Lloyd Culbreath, an accomplished Broadway performer who’s worked with Michael Bennett, Bob Fosse, Chita Rivera, and Tommy Tune, brings his arsenal of youthful, experienced staging to the show, providing a solid foundation from which the dancers can flourish. Ryan O’Gara, a protégé of Hal Binkley (Avenue Q, Jersey Boys and Xanadu), brings his years of lighting design expertise to the production, while NYU-Tisch graduate and film director Jared Frank uses live-video and animation to bring an exciting multi-media component to Revolution.

Sponsored by Gibson Guitar and Capezio, Revolution will play the following schedule from September 25 – October 7 at The Joyce Theater (175 Eighth Avenue @ 19th Street): Tuesday and Wednesday @ 7:30 PM; Thursday and Friday @ 8:00 PM; Saturday @ 2:00 PM & 8:00 PM; Sunday @ 2:00 PM & 7:30 PM.
