QuickTime is a multimedia standard implemented by Apple Computers, Inc. that allows you
to digitize video and sound and play it back without any hardware
decoders. Apple has version 1.6.2 available on the Internet and version
2.1 should be available by now. If you wish to simply view QuickTime
files use a viewer designed for your operating system. QuickTime files
on our site are named using the ".mov" extension.
Macintosh
Apple has versions 1.6.2 and 2.1 available on the Internet. The 1.6.2 package is for
older Macs (since System 7.0 and later versions of the MacOS come bundled with
the QuickTime extensions, so we've heard). Apple is selling QuickTime 2.1 as a commercial
package on their Web site. Several QuickTime viewers are also available on the Internet.
Our site currently will only offer 1.x
compatible QuickTime files.
Apple has put version 1.1.1 of QuickTime for Windows out on the Internet.
Version 2.0.3 is available as a commercial package from Apple also. Both
versions require that you install several .dll files and modify your .ini
configuration files.
An excellent QuickTime viewer for UNIX (which also happens to play many other
file formats) is xanim. It is available as source and has been ported to many
platforms.
