The last time Rush appeared on television, Gerald Ford was in the White House and a gallon of gas could be had for around 50 cents. Returning to the small screen for the first time in 33 years, the veteran Canadian prog rockers immediately showed their good humor on Comedy Central’s Colbert Report by sitting for a typically loopy interview, with host Stephen Colbert perched on a VH1-inspired stool so tall it required a safety harness. Then the band closed the show with a bracing performance of their 1981 hit, “Tom Sawyer” whose expansiveness was part of a running gag on the show.
