This is the riff from my tune, “Rollin’ Home”, on my first Toolin’ Around album, which I played with the great Albert Lee. It’s a true workout in the use of open strings giving you the “bounce” and flexibility to develop some real rapid-fire hot licks in the key of G.
As you’ll see, G is a perfect key for this style, as it has three open strings in it already, which give you so many possibilities for this technique. We will also explore playing it as a “double-stop” harmony part, which is essentially re-creating what Albert and I did together on the original recording! Hope you enjoy this great “hot lick” workout!—Arlen Roth
