An Introduction to Hybrid Picking

Hybrid picking is what I always refer to as "pick and finger.” An extremely versatile and flexible technique, it allows you to combine the best of both worlds: flatpicking and fingerpicking together! This is great for learning the great piano-style licks of Buddy Guy, and the great pedal-steel sounds of Clarence White of the Byrds.

In this lesson I'll show you some of those licks, as well as help you develop this technique in general as an extension of your current style. I have found that many players use it to some extent, but don't really rely on it as heavily as they could.

You'll also see how the hybrid style of picking enables you to "dampen" notes better, and how it can really be used for some great rockabilly rhythm playing as well as lead playing.

A great tool for all guitarists, and a lesson not to be missed.—Arlen Roth
