Arlen Roth's Lesson Replay: Week of August 4, 2008

Gabriel J. Hernandez | 08.08.2008

Arlen RothArlen Roth's exclusive guitar lessons on Gibson Lifestyle keep getting better and better. And if you've been with us for the last couple of weeks, your guitar playing should be improving as well.

Roth's infectious teaching style has never been this good. And this past week's fine lessons are a great example of the variety and proficiency of Roth's tutorials.

Monday's lesson got the week off to a fantastic start with a great lesson on soul and R&B double stops, with Roth demonstrating the double stop techniques of players like Jimi Hendrix, Cornell Dupree, and Steve Cropper.

Next up was a fabulous lesson on how to double the bass line for blues guitar, a technique that was made famous by several great Chicago blues legends, like Buddy Guy and Otis Rush. Roth's mastery of this technique was clearly evident as he examined the art of "walking" and "string jumping" bass lines.

Switching gears from the blues to jazz, Roth's lesson from Wednesday took a look at Wes Montgomery's pioneering technique of using octave notes when playing either rhythm or lead jazz parts. The correct use of the thumb to achieve the "brush" technique was also covered.

Yesterday's lesson took the octave style one step further, examining the contrary motion technique, which is the use of positions and licks where one note goes down while the other goes up—or vice versa. Roth also looked at the various ways to pick this technique, and how to incorporate it into your own style of playing.

Next week promises another great set of free guitar lessons from Arlen Roth, including a look at hybrid picking and various shuffle licks—all for free, exclusively here at Gibson Lifestyle!
