Slash Speaks, Part II: “'Sweet Child o’ Mine' Probably Would Have Never Happened”

Steven Rosen | 03.10.2008

Guns N' Roses

Appetite for Destruction sold 27 million copies. The 1987 recording spawned three Top 10 hits including the No. 1 single, “Sweet Child o’ Mine.” This essential, octave-based riff has now become one of the first songs every new guitarist must learn. Forget “Smoke On the Water” or “Stairway to Heaven.” Walk into any guitar shop and you’ll hear it being lovingly mangled by novice players everywhere. Here, Slash talks about his mixed feelings for the song, and is quick to acknowledge Axl’s recognition of its potential.
