Forty-years ago this summer the second generation of rock and roll defined its musical borders in a cow pasture in Woodstock, New York. On the, well, pastoral side was the acoustic magic of Crosby, Stills & Nash and Ritchie Havens. Opposite that was what Jimi Hendrix proclaimed the “electric church.” And some of its fieriest preachers at the August 15 through 17 tent revival for the love generation sermonized with Gibson SG guitars in their hands.

In a previous piece I looked at ways of finding good used guitars at the traditional old bargain-basement haunts such as pawn shops, garage sales and local music stores, with emphasis on what you need to check out to avoid getting stung. Many of the same rules apply to hunting for used tube amplifiers, but these require an entirely different set of considerations regarding both functional condition and, in this case, safety.

Adorning electric guitars with artwork is something many fine artists have done. Strangely, however, the same cannot be said about acoustic guitars. In that sense, Louis Yanez is a pioneer. A self-taught amateur artist who lives in Queens, New York, Yanez makes his living as a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service.

Tone hounds in the know, especially those who have spent any time chasing great sounds in professional studios, have understood for years that one of the best ways to get a huge-sounding guitar track is to stick a good mic in front of a small tube amp and crank the thing up. These same players rarely use such small amps live, however, so we usually aren’t let in on the secret. Let’s open the door on the live room with the green light on and the tape running, and discover some powerful tones achieved on pint-sized amplifiers.

The ultimate “legendary guitar” is that great instrument that a groundbreaking player latches onto and loves deeply throughout his or her career — devoting the vast bulk of their art to just that one guitar, a six-string with no parallel among its peers, in their estimation at least. With this in mind, Brian May’s “Red Special” has not only been his partner in the vast majority of his noteworthy work, but he himself created it to embody precisely what he was looking for from an instrument.

When I first saw a demo of the new Voice Box pedal from Electro-Harmonix I was floored by the versatility, ease-of-use and the price (street price $215). I knew then and there that I must get one. There is nothing worse than being in a band (especially a cover band) where you need background vocalists and have nobody to cover. This pedal has your back. It also comes in handy beefing up your acoustic singer/songwriter performances. Check it out for yourself and see the heavens open and harmonies flow!
