Paul McCartney Adds Shows To Summer Mini-Tour

Russell Hall | 06.26.2009

What started out as Paul McCartney’s christening of the New York Mets’ new Citi Field stadium, where the former Beatle will perform on July 17, 18, and 21, is shaping up to be a mini-tour.

Last week an additional concert was announced for Washington, D.C, and now shows in Boston and Atlanta have been added as well. Moreover, McCartney’s website states there will be “more dates to be announced.”

The show at D.C.’s FedExField, scheduled for Aug. 1, will be McCartney’s first in the nation’s capital since October 2005. The city’s Washington Coliseum was the site of the Beatles’ first-ever concert in America in 1964. The two Boston shows – slated for Aug. 5 and 6 – will take place at Fenway Park, while the Atlanta show will be staged at the city’s historic Piedmont Park on Aug. 15.

According to a press release, the concerts will include material from the Beatles and Wings catalog, as well as music from McCartney’s solo albums, and his side project, the Fireman.

New York’s Citi Field was built as a replacement for Shea Stadium, where the Beatles delivered a legendary televised performance in 1965. Last year McCartney joined Billy Joel for a final gig at Shea before the stadium was demolished.

The Atlanta concert will be a benefit show to raise money for the upkeep of Piedmont Park. In 2007, the Dave Matthews Band and the Allman Brothers Band drew 50,000 concert-goers to the park for a benefit show. The crowd for the McCartney concert is expected to eclipse that mark.

Current Paul McCartney's U.S. tour dates, with more expected to be announced:

July 17 - New York, Citi Field
July 18 - New York, Citi Field
July 21 - New York, Citi Field
Aug. 1 - Washington, FedExField
Aug. 5 - Boston, Fenway Park
Aug. 6 - Boston, Fenway Park
Aug. 15 - Atlanta, Piedmont Park
