Aerosmith Launches Monster Tour and Then … Cancels Show?

Ellen Mallernee | 07.02.2009

Six dates into its North American summer tour, Aerosmith announced on Wednesday it was cancelling that evening’s performance (with ZZ Top as opener) at Riverbed Music Center in Cincinnati, Ohio, “due to an injury in the band.”

Mishaps and injuries have plagued the band in recent months — guitarist Brad Whitford has missed the tour thus far after bumping his head against his Ferrari, lead singer Steven Tyler battled pneumonia, and guitarist Joe Perry has had reoccurring problems with his knees.

That aside, Aerosmith has so far floored audiences by playing its 1976 album Toys In The Attic in its entirety each night. (That means classics like “Walk This Way” and “Sweet Emotion” are in the set list.)

The tour’s opening night, near the band’s Boston hometown, in Mansfield, Mass., wasn’t even marred by the lightening storms that cut a couple songs short.

After the show, Joe Perry told one interviewer, “As far as opening nights go, it was probably an 80. Usually they come in as about a 50, but yesterday was about an 80. We really stepped up … We managed to hold on to some of the best guys that we’ve ever worked with, and the show — I was just watching it last night and listening to it and I was just blown away.”

The band’s performance Friday night at Long Island’s Jones Beach is another tour stand-out. Playing opening band, ZZ Top didn’t hold out on hits “Sharp Dressed Man,” “Legs,” and “Cheap Sunglasses.” Even a cover of Jimi Hendrix’s “Foxy Lady” made it into the set.

That show was notable, too, for Tyler’s dedication of “You See Me Crying” to daughter Liv Tyler, who stood side stage.

There’s no word yet on whether more tour date cancellations are to follow.
