This lick is in the key of E and features counterpoint and a stationary common tone. One voice is the common tone E, which is played on the first string 12th fret in each position. The other two voices move in opposite directions on the 2nd and 4th strings. The combined sound of the three voices creates a unique sound that works in modern or delta blues.
