Neal Schons new solo CD, i on u, harkens back to his Journey years, but its not what youre thinking unless you were into Journey in the pre-arena rock, pre-Steve Perry era, when Schon used his thickly textured guitar sound to inject a jazzy voice into rock and roll. The Traveling Test
Dave Amato, guitarist with perennial road warriors REO Speedwagon, gave the new Traveling Songwriter a complete test drive. It passed the musical test when he played it in Gibsons Beverly Hills showroom. Then it passed the traveling test when he hopped a Southwest flight to Phoenix for an REO gig, with the guitar safely and conveniently stored in the overhead bin.

Gibson has teamed up with The Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum and the Ford Motor Company's Lincoln brand to auction an all-new 2006 Lincoln Mark LT pickup truck autographed by dozens of country performers. In addition to the new truck the winner will receive a Gibson Custom Lincoln Mark LT guitar produced exclusively for the auction and not available for sale anywhere else. Finally, the winner also will get the chance to come to Nashville for a behind-the-scenes tour of the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum. All proceeds will go directly to the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum. The auction runs through April 30.
"Rock the Cure"
Gwen Stefani and No Doubt have finished painting their guitar for the "Rock the Cure" Breast Cancer Fundraiser at the Hard Rock in LA (May 3). Other stars such as Joe Perry and Drake Bell (star of Nickelodeon's "Drake and Josh") have donated their painted Gibsons as well. Black Sabbath's Tony Iommi presented his personalized Gibson guitar to Juliens Auctions recently. The guitars will be only several of many celebrity painted and designed Gibson guitars at a gala.
The Gibson Bus pulled up to the new Orlando Guitar Center, and Gibson was on-hand to help celebrate the Grand Opening (Feb. 24). Crowds lined the streets to be a part of the huge event, which included prize giveaways, live performances and discounted merchandise.
Ray Benson
Legendary musician and post-modern king of Western swing Ray Benson unveiled his new Gibson Signature Valley Arts guitar to press and VIPs at the official Ray Benson Birthday Bash during South By Southwest. The event, held at La Zonas in Austin was standing room only. The Benson Signature Valley Arts model features a Texas-shaped pickguard and several color choices. Ray also toured the streets of Austin on the official Gibson Guitar tour bus with the Texas Rollergirls.
Hotel MOBY
W HOTEL has formed a partnership with music icon and Gibson rocker Moby to host a series of live performances. The unplugged performances will kick off the launch of Moby's new album hotel. Moby will perform before invited W guests in Chicago (March 29) and in Los Angeles (April 4). Moby's hotel CD will be available in W guest rooms nationwide and sold through W Hotels the Store and online at Whotelsthestore.com.

Local visual artists Barbara Coon and Brad Gaidos put the finishing touches on their two Gibson Guitar sculptures to be featured at the initial unveiling of Nashville's GuitarTown. The 10-foot-tall guitars, sponsored by The William Morris Agency and Vanderbilt University, will be two of many unveiled (April 1) in front of the Gaylord Entertainment Center and displayed throughout the city until the end of the year. Each guitar sculpture will be auctioned off at a gala auction event in early 2006 with proceeds benefiting the Country Music Hall of Fame, The Downtown District, United Way and the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
Vini Vidi Vida
Epiphone artist Jason Martinez of Grupo Vida was deemed Guitar Player of the Year at the 2005 Tejano Music Awards (March 19). Grupo Vida is nominated for four TMA awards. "Whether playing in front of thousands of screaming fans while opening on the Dixie Chicks Fly Tour," said Jason, "or laying down tracks in the studio for Grupo Vida's Latest top selling CD, Gibson guitars has always been my brand of choice." Jason believes his Guitar Player of the Year award is due to being true to his sound, and his sound is true Gibson.
Happy 'Dark' Birthday
Justin Hawkins from The Darkness celebrated his 30th birthday with his exact double at Madame Tussaud's Museum in London (March 17). Hawkins, along with his famous Gibson Les Paul Pink Sparkle guitar will be immortalized at the famous museum.
3 Doors Down
Popular rock band, 3 Doors Down signed an Epiphone AJ-200 guitar for charity before performing a mini concert at Wisseloord Studios in the Netherlands for local fans. The mini concert was to promote their new album Seventeen Days.
Giving "Gonzo"
The Arizona Diamondbacks' Luis "Gonzo" Gonzalez presented pitcher Brandan Meaders with a beautiful Steinberger guitar during spring training in Tucson, Arizona (March 17). "Gonzo," known for his generosity with his teammates, heard Brandan playing acoustic guitar around the clubhouse and was impressed. Gonzo said, "The kid has serious chops, and I wanted to hook him up with an electric guitar."

The Gibson/Baldwin Showroom in Beverly Hills hosted a showcase for Latin rockers MokteZoom (March 18). The quartet includes members Maria Fernanda Karolis (vocals), Fernando Torreblanca (drums), Michel Denegri (bass) and Luis Torreblanca (guitar), and their latest album, Impossible, rose to the top 20 charts of WRTE Radio in January.
Gibson Flies with The Today Show
Gibson has teamed up with NBC's "The Today Show" to present two personalized Flying V guitars during the show's Toyota Concert Series. The two Flying Vs in Classic White, each adorned with Toyota Concert Series' emblem, will be autographed by the Series' musical guests each week, throughout the 17-week run. The two autographed Flying Vs will then be auctioned off on eBay to raise money for Mr. Holland's Opus Foundation, which supports music education.
Kiyanu Rocks Letterman
Kiyanu Kim, guitarist for Gwen Stefani, rocked out "The Late Show with David Letterman" in New York City. Kiyanu, who has been playing guitar professionally since 2002, has also released an independent album with his own band, Misuniverse (made up of himself and musical buddy Dim Gurevich).
