Thanks to bands like Reflector, the high-octane punk rock scene that has been fulminating for years in Beijing is starting to break out of China and get some much-deserved international attention. Inspired by a Guns N Roses record, Reflector was founded in 1997 and now consists of bassist Tian Jianhua, guitarist Li Peng, and drummer Ye Jingying. Friends since grade school, the band has been performing at DIY punk shows throughout Beijing since 1998. Like all good punk bands, Reflector contributed songs to a compilation disc (Wuliao Contingent, a four-band double disc from Scream!Records) while living hand-to-mouth in their local punk scene. In 2001, Reflector became the first band to ever tour the U.S., performing shows in seven cities on the West Coast. After an amazing performance opening up for Anti-Flag in Sacramento, the band flew home. With fast, tight, NOFX-style songs powered by Peng's pummeling SG and Jianhua's Thunderbird bass, Reflector are a band to watch. Currently recording a new album for summer release, the band has been touring colleges in China, and also just played the Gibson-sponsored Nanshan Open International Snowboard Competition.
