On the morning of March 21st, famed New York cabaret singer and Baldwin artist Bobby Short passed away from leukemia at New York Presbyterian Hospital. Short, whose musical career spanned more than seven decades, played his Baldwin nightly at the Carlyle Hotel for more than 36 years.

Short’s self-taught piano skills were brought to the limelight by the age of nine, when he began performing around his hometown of Danville, Illinois. By age 11, he was playing the Chicago circuit and deemed “The Miniature King of Swing.” Within the next year he was playing shows around the Midwest, starring in Manhattan night clubs, and by 1968, had signed a deal with the Carlyle Hotel, playing his Baldwin piano six nights a week, eight months a year.

Short is survived by his adopted son Ronald Bell and his brother Reginald Short.

Bobby, you will be missed.
