Otis Rush

At the forefront of Chicago's West Side blues style of the early '60s, Otis Rush—along with the late, great Magic Sam and Buddy Guy—pioneered a guitar style that would have a profound impact on the nascent British blues scene. Rush's pleading vocals underscored the drama of his screaming over-bends, wrenched from a right-handed guitar that the left-handed blues master played upside down. Listen here, to Rush performing "Natural Ball" at Montreux in 1986, and you can hear the influence his emotional, expressive lead work had on Eric Clapton, Mick Taylor, and Peter Green, among many others.
