Gibson Custom’s Collector’s Choice™ series painstakingly replicates choice original vintage Les Pauls, bringing you the closest thing possible to owning a specific, existing vintage Les Paul. Collector’s Choice #10, 1968 Tom Scholz Les Paul is a landmark of rock history, re-creating the star’s own stripped-down and hotrodded ’68 Goldtop Deluxe just as it was used by Scholz, guitarist of the legendary rock band Boston, to create his most notable recordings. Gibson Custom studied every curve, electronic specification, ding and scratch of the original guitar—with close cooperation from Tom Scholz himself. The final results are represented in a strictly limited run with a maximum production of 300 guitars. As an accomplished sound engineer, MIT graduate, inventor, and holder of dozens of electronic patents, Scholz, not surprisingly, modified the original guitar extensively. Prior to the recording of the first Boston album he stripped the gold finish down to the natural maple, and added a DiMarzio Super Distortion humbucking pickup in the bridge position, while retaining the guitar’s original P-90 in the neck position. He also replaced the original Klusons™ with the Schaller™ M6™ tuners that were popular at the time. You’ll find it all here in this uncompromising reproduction, which delivers the look, feel and tone of a rock legend’s own guitar.
Stripped, carved maple top and lightweight, one-piece mahogany body, all with accurate ageing.
Glued-in mahogany neck with distinctive ’68 profile, 14-degree headstock angle, and one-piece rosewood fingerboard with cellulose inlays.
Stripped natural top finish, and natural back and sides, all aged to match the original guitar.
A DiMarzio™ Super Distortion® in the bridge position and vintage-style P-90 in the neck, with traditional control layout.
Period correct Tune-o-matic bridge, stopbar tailpiece, and Schaller™ M6® tuners, all in aged nickel.
Gold late-’60s top-hat knobs with silver inserts; the guitar wears no pickguard.
