A Glorious Swan Song for the P-90 Goldtop
From its arrival in 1952 until the time it gave way to its humbucker-loaded successor in 1957, the Les Paul Model, known as the “Goldtop,” went through a surprising number of incarnations. One of the favorites of many tonehounds was the last stop on the evolutionary road before the P-90 vanished from the template: in late 1955 Gibson’s revolutionary new Tune-o-matic bridge and stopbar tailpiece were added to the formula. This significant change created a guitar with increased adjustability for perfect intonation, and a sharp, singing tone, while retaining the vintage-rock looks of the Goldtop finish and the meaty, edgy tones of the beloved P-90 single-coil pickups. A rare bird, produced only from late ’55 until around the end of ’56, this stunning instrument is available again in the form of the Custom Shop Stock 1955 Les Paul Goldtop, an exclusive limited-run model that celebrates the innovations of 1955, both for Gibson and for America as a whole. In 1955 Gibson was forging the tones of rock and roll, a genre still barely a toddler, while the first Chevy V8s hit dealerships across the country, and Chuck Berry, Billy Haley, and Elvis Presley and Scotty Moore—all rebels of a new breed of music—were blasting out of jukeboxes across the country. Something was afoot, and nowhere was this spirit of progress and adventure better embodied than in the 1955 Les Paul Goldtop.

The Custom Stock 1955 Les Paul Goldtop represents a turning point in guitar technology and design, a gateway from old designs to new. Stemming from Gibson tradition, the guitar had a carved arched top, bound body and fingerboard, and set neck with tone-enhancing back-angled headstock. Pointing the way forward, it comprised the industries most influential solidbody electric guitar design, initiated the legendary tonewood pairing of maple and mahogany, and carried the revolutionary new Tune-o-matic bridge. Representing Gibson president Ted McCarty’s groundbreaking intention on the Stock 1955 Les Paul Goldtop, the Tune-o-matic and stopbar pairing include TonePros Long steel anchors and long-locking studs for improved resonance and sustain. Two screaming P-90 pickups offer all the fat, vintage-voiced grit and bluster that have made these single-coils legendary since their arrival in the late 1940s, while a thin nitrocellulose Goldtop finish allows the tonewood to breath and resonate freely.

The Custom Stock 1955 Les Paul Goldtop is a major contender in the playability stakes, too. Les Pauls have always been known for their great feeling necks, fast action, and superb string-bending capabilities. This exclusive model ups the ante with a unique new “Soft Shouldered” neck that revives an authentic profile from the mid ’50s. Created by the Custom Shop’s luthiers after detailed study of a particularly “magic feeling” neck on an original ’55 Les Paul, this neck has a similar front-to-back depth as a standard rounded mid-’50s neck, but differs in its gently sloping sides, a feature that makes it sit incredibly comfortably in the hand—and a pure joy to play. The custom Stock 1955 Les Paul Goldtop comes with a Gibson Custom hardshell case and a “Year of 1955 Innovation” certificate. Check it out now at selected online dealers.
