Neck and Headstock

Neck Species
The neck of the Firebird V is made from a 9-piece mahogany and walnut construction for superior strength as well as superb resonance and sustain. Neck Species
Neck Profile
The neck on the Firebird V is carved to a hybrid '50s/'60s shape that is slim and fast, yet rounded and comfortable in the hand. It measures approximately .800" thick at the 1st fret and .850" at the 12th. Neck Profile
Tonal Characteristics
The angled, classical-style peg head and mahogany/walnut through-neck work together to provide exceptional tonal depth and outstanding resonance from the neck, with a good string definition and sustain.
When fitting the neck and body together, we take advantage of our precise measuring equipment so that all angles, pitches and alignments maintain a tolerance within .005 of an inch. Not only does this help to keep your guitar in tune but it also maintains proper string alignment relative to the fingerboard.
Gibson uses a unique through-neck construction for the Firebird V, in which the neck and central body core are formed of the same laminated wood blank. Neck Joint
Headstock Angle
The Firebird V headstock is carefully angled at 14 degrees, which increases pressure on the strings and helps them stay in the nut slots. An increase in string pressure also means there is no loss of string vibration between the nut and the tuners, which equals better sustain.
Truss Rod
Gibson's traditional truss rod, found in most all of our guitars, is highly responsive to the individual adjustments you'll want to make to personalize and optimize string action and sustain. Truss Rod
TThe Gibson logo — one of the most globally recognized logos of all time — is silkscreened in gold in the black Firebird truss-rod cover. Logo
The adhesive used to join neck/body core and body wings is Franklin Titebond 50, one of the strongest glues on the market today.
Average Weight
The average weight of the neck is .98 lbs.

Fingerboard and Nut

Fingerboard Species
The neck of the Firebird V carries a bound rosewood fingerboard. Fingerboard Species
The Firebird V sports 22 medium-jumbo frets, the preferred size of rock and blues players looking for optimum playing comfort, tone, and easy bending. Frets
Tonal Characteristics
Rosewood has a warm, rich, responsive tone that has clear and tight bass projection without overshadowing sparkling midrange or trebles.
The Firebird V fingerboard carries acrylic trapezoid position markers. Inlays
Nut Material
Firebird V has a nut made from Corian, a dense, hard material known for its outstanding ability to transfer the strings' vibrational energy. It is installed into the top surface of the neck, butting up to the end of the fingerboard and its nut slots are cut with Gibson's PLEK system to ensure precise fit, break angle, and string spacing. Nut Width
Nut Width
The width of the nut on the Firebird V is approximately 1 11/16", the traditional nut width of Gibson electric guitars.
The 12-inch radius of the Firebird V fingerboard provides smooth note bending capabilities and eliminates "dead" or "choked out" notes, common occurrences on fingerboards with lesser radiuses.
