An Iconic Flat-Top from the Heart of the Folk Boom Hummingbird New Vintage
Hummingbird New Vintage
Introduced in 1960 at the front end of the folk-music boom in the United States, the Gibson Hummingbird was a glorious new square-shouldered flat-top with a distinctive look and a clear, strong voice. With its ability to project a strong rhythm or purr out a fingerstyle piece with equal skill, this large, bold acoustic soon became a fixture not only in coffee houses, but on country and rock ’n’ roll stages, too. In the intervening years, original models have earned a status as rare birds from a great era of acoustics, equally desirable to players and collectors alike. The Gibson Hummingbird New Vintage recreates the best of this legendary model in an instrument available to guitarists today. Crafted for superb tone and playing feel right out of the case, this new vintage exclusive is available only at Wildwood Guitars. Constructed by the acclaimed luthiers at the Gibson Acoustic facility in Bozeman, Mont., the Wildwood Hummingbird is one of five models in a stunning New Vintage series, each of which represents an exhaustive recreation of a great Gibson flat-top acoustic.

Like all others in the series—the Southern Jumbo, SJ-200, J-45 and J-185—the Gibson Hummingbird New Vintage is available in three different editions, each of which strictly follows the specs of original vintage models, but represents different levels of constructional finish and wood selection. All three share period-correct details such as a solid Sitka Spruce top, spruce X-brace, belly-up rosewood bridge with aged bone saddle, and solid one-piece mahogany neck with round profile. The Standard model has solid mahogany back and sides and uses hot hide glue for its dovetailed neck joint, while the Hide Glue model has solid mahogany back and sides uses this traditional adhesive for other elements of its construction, such as the attachment of its scalloped spruce braces. The Exotic Rosewood model uses the same degree of hide glue construction, but adds exotic rosewood back and sides selected by Gibson Acoustic’s master luthier, Ren Ferguson, for an exotic appearance and a sublimely rich, deep voice.

The Gibson Hummingbird New Vintage presents a reincarnation of the original in the looks department, too. Its hand-sprayed Heritage Cherry Sunburst finish in nitrocellulose lacquer is buffed to a high gloss, and enhanced by its large three-point pickguard with pastoral hummingbird engraving that was casted in the original 1960s mold from Kalamazoo and hand-painted in Montana. The bound rosewood fingerboard carries distinctive split-parallelogram mother-of-pearl inlays, partnered with a period-correct mother-of-pearl Gibson logo and crown inlay on the headstock, and vintage-style gold-plated tuners with green tulip keys. From look to feel to tone, the Hummingbird New Vintage totally embodies one of Gibson’s most legendary acoustic creations, and it is only available from Wildwood Guitars.

Each instrument includes a True Vintage hardshell case with brown exterior and pink plush-lined interior, a Certificate of Authenticity, an owner’s manual, and Gibson’s Gold Warranty, along with Gibson’s 24/7/365 Customer Service. Check it out now, only at Wildwood Guitars.
