Made By Hand: The Story of Gibson Acoustic
The body's top is made from solid Sitka spruce, one of the most highly regarded woods for the soundboards of acoustic guitars. Its back and sides are made from solid mahogany, a perennial choice for this application. The two Custom Shop variants are made from luthier-selected exotic rosewood and Grade-AAA Hawaiian Koa respectively.
The Hummingbird is an extremely well balanced and versatile guitar. It offers outstanding depth, breadth and richness in the vein of the great large-bodied mahogany flat-tops. The solid Sitka spruce top presents outstanding clarity and complexity, while the mahogany back and sides contribute warmth and dimension to the tone reminiscent of playing through a sweet sounding tube amp. All of this, and unsurpassed volume and projection, suit the Hummingbird to a surprisingly wide range of playing styles. The Exotic Rosewood model adds enhanced clarity, bottom end and sparkle to the overall sound of this guitar, while the "AAA" Koa model provides the rich, well-balanced voice that this rare tonewood is known for.
The Hummingbird is designed in the image of the large-bodied, square-shouldered dreadnoughts that Gibson produced from 1960 onward. Its 16 1/4"-wide body has the capacity for full, deep tones and plenty of volume, and its 14th-fret neck/body joint allows excellent upper-fret access. The use of scalloped X-bracing beneath a superior top further enhances this instrument's resonance and, ultimately, its tone.
The 50th Anniversary 1960 Hummingbird is finished in a period correct Heritage Dark Cherry Sunburst, as is the Custom Exotic Rosewood model. The Custom "AAA" Koa model is finished in Gold Honey Burst.

Gibson's acclaimed acoustic facility in Bozeman, MT, hand finishes these guitars in nitrocellulose lacquer, which is kept to a low build-up and hand buffed to a high sheen. In addition to looking great and aging beautifully, this thin nitrocellulose finish avoids impeding the vibration of the superior tonewoods used in this guitar and is known to "sweeten with age."
