The National Football League has confirmed that Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers will perform during the halftime show for Super Bowl XLII. The league’s announcement effectively quashed rumors that the headliner for the 2008 halftime spectacular might be the Eagles or Bruce Springsteen. The NFL has focused on booking classic rock/guitar-oriented performers—Paul McCartney, the Rolling Stones, and Prince—for the show in the wake of bad publicity stemming from Janet Jackson’s infamous wardrobe malfunction at the 2004 event. Super Bowl XLII will be played on February 3 at the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, and will air on the Fox network.—Jerry McCulley
