Tom Petty

The news came out Monday (Oct. 2) that legendary singer and songwriter Tom Petty had been hospitalized, and the music community instantly responded.

Monday afternoon, a report surfaced that Petty had passed away, but at that point he was hospitalized and still alive. Sadly, Petty's manager has confirmed in an official statement that Petty passed away at 8:40 p.m. PST Monday. He was 66 years old.

“On behalf of the Tom Petty family, we are devastated to announce the untimely death of of our father, husband, brother, leader and friend Tom Petty,” Tony Dimitriades, longtime manager of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, told the Los Angeles Times. “He suffered cardiac arrest at his home in Malibu in the early hours of this morning and was taken to UCLA Medical Center but could not be revived. He died peacefully at 8:40 p.m. PT surrounded by family, his bandmates and friends.”

George Harrison's Twitter account stated in two tweets, "Tom was a tender southern gent in life, a poet and a music master on stage. He had a rocking chair wisdom that brought everything back...down to earth. We will love and miss him for the rest of our days. Our thoughts are with his family and all the ( broken hearts). Olivia and Dhani"

"SAD SAD. day. I just heard Tom passed. One of the great ones. Thank you for all the great music T- Rest in peace," stated Joe Walsh.

"So sad about Tom Petty, he made some great music. Thoughts are with his family," tweeted Mick Jagger.

Brian May of Queen tweeted, "Shocked and so sad at the passing of Tom Petty. RIP. Bri."
