Lucinda Williams plays Gibson J-45

Lucinda Williams has completed a most unusual stand at Los Angeles’ El Rey Theater. Beginning September 5 for five nights following, each of Williams' first sets comprised an entire album from her award-winning catalog. In reverse chronological order, she took her Gibson J-45 through World Without Tears, Essence, Car Wheels on a Gravel Road, Sweet Old World, and Lucinda Williams. Each night’s second set was comprised of a range of material, much of it from her recent release West, though there were also a number of covers and high-profile guests. The first night saw Shelby Lynne and Ann Wilson of Heart lending their pipes. For the Essence night, Mike Stinson, Tim Easton, and former Afghan Whigs leader Greg Dulli joined, Dulli for three songs including Johnny Cash’s “Jackson” and the unreleased Williams’ number “Real Love.” The Car Wheels night saw fellow rough country crooner Steve Earle and his wife Allison Moorer come out plus Heartbreakers guitarist Mike Campbell. Surprising everyone the following night was Doors’ keyboardist Robbie Krieger and singer/songwriter Chuck Prophet, with Emmylou Harris joining her the final evening. Williams will do the same run of shows, likely with different guests, at The Fillmore in New York beginning September 29.
