There are good albums. Then there are really good albums. And then there are those special albums. The ones that kick down the door, knock you on your back, and have their way with you. They rewrite the rules, spawn countless imitators, and no matter how much you play them, they grow better with each passing year. Each one of these albums fits these criteria. But they have something else in common: Each was crafted using a Gibson guitar or two (or three or four) in the studio.

The great Hubert Sumlin, the man who provided the slashing, dancing guitar work on many of the classic sides recorded by blues master Howlin’ Wolf, will mark his 76th birthday with a performance at New York City’s Terra Blues on November 17. In advance of that celebration, Hubert will perform this Saturday (Sept. 29) at the Mid-Atlantic Blues and Music Festival, which will take place at Bernie Robbins Stadium in Atlantic City, New Jersey. The two-day event, which counts Gibson among its sponsors, will also feature Lil’ Ed and the Blues Imperials, Big Bill Morganfield, John Lee Hooker Jr., Bernard Allison, Shemekia Copeland, and more. —Sean McDevitt

For years now, Chuck Berry has played at least once a month at a club in his native St. Louis called Blueberry Hill, where patrons are able to get a great look at “The Guitar that Rocked the World”—Berry’s legendary Gibson ES-350T, which he used to record rock and roll classics like “Sweet Little Sixteen,” “Memphis,” and “Johnny B. Goode.” But it looks like the Gibson icon, who turns 81 years old in October, will leave behind the popular nightspot’s Duck Room for most of the month of November as he ventures off to Europe for 14 performances that will take him to countries like Germany, Switzerland, Finland, Belgium, Denmark, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, France, and Spain. Still a big draw when he plays live, Berry sold out a mid-September gig at B.B. King’s Blues Club & Grill in New York City’s Times Square. He’s currently slated to play the club again December 30. —Sean McDevitt
