According to several news reports, guitarist Steve Vai plays Hank Williams in a Hank Garland biopic that's now making the rounds at several film festivals. Titled Crazy, the film features Vai in a cameo role, and retraces the colorful life of Garland, a top Nashville session guitarist during the '50s who recorded with Elvis Presley, Roy Orbison, and Dave Brubeck, among others. Ali Larter, Shawn Colvin, and Katharine McPhee also star in the film. Actor Waylon Payne plays Garland in the film; he also played Jerry Lee Lewis in 2005 blockbuster Walk the Line. This isn't the first film role for Vai either. He played the devil's guitarist, Jack Butler, in Crossroads in 1986.

|
Comments
If you haven't heard already, Jessica Simpson is giving country music a go. And so far, so good. Her debut single, "Come On Over," debuted at No. 41 on Billboard's Hot Country Songs chart. (Sure, Shania Twain had a hit single by the same name 11 years ago, but who cares? Why mess with the tried and the true?) Simpson's debut on the charts marks the highest ever for a country music newcomer.

Successful Test Run for World’s Largest Pedalboard

06.04.2008

Comments
How many pedals can fit on a functioning pedalboard? Perhaps ten, maybe 12, tops? Well, Jaux King, one of the founders of GearTrap.com, a Nashville, TN-based blog devoted to all things related to guitar gear, aims to find out. With the help of several prominent sponsors—including Pedaltrain, George L’s cables, and Seymour Duncan, among others—King has set his sights on building the world’s largest pedalboard, and getting officials from Guinness World Records to sanction it. And if this past weekend’s successful test is any indication, King just might pull it off. A total of eight loaded pedalboards with approximately 70 different pedals were hooked up and powered up without any glitches. Granted, no one really knew what to expect, but everyone was surely happy to hear the undisputable tone of the Les Paul hooked up to test it.

Rest in Peace Bo Diddley: Dec. 30, 1928 - June 2, 2008

Gibson has just learned that the great Bo Diddley has passed away at home of Archer, Florida. He was 79. A true pioneer of rock and roll, Diddley was a brutal guitar minimalist and a lifelong musical innovator and inventor. From the stomp of “Hey Bo Diddley” and “Who Do You Love?” to the sweet rhythm of “Mona” and “Dearest Darling,” Diddley took the driving one-chord blues of the Mississippi hills and added Chicago’s electricity and rock and roll’s style and swagger to create sonic gold. It was in this beautiful experimentation that rock and roll was born. With raw, stripped-down songs hollered over a snapping snare, maracas, and a reverb-and-tremolo drenched guitar, nobody sounded like Bo Diddley. His music and influence will live on forever. Rest in peace, Bo. –Ari Surdoval
