Free Download: BOB MOULD "THE SILENCE BETWEEN US" A true punk-rock veteran, Bob Mould fronted the enormously influential punk act Hüsker Dü in the ’80s, and led college rock act Sugar in the ’90s. For the past decade he’s released solo material under his own name, most recently District Line, which teamed him with Fugazi drummer Brendan Canty. District Line reconciles Mould’s classic-rock songwriting with his love of electronica (see his dance album Modulate), blending organic and synthetic elements into songs like "The Silence Between Us." —Jonah Bayer

In a candid new interview with Minneapolis-St. Paul's Star Tribune, KISS's former guitarist Ace Frehley reveals he's none too keen on on what KISS are up to now that he's out of the band and doing the solo thing. Here are a couple of savory highlights from the interview ... On having 19 months of sobriety: "That puts a different twist on everything. It's great to wake up without a hangover and not remembering what you did the night before. Life just seems to be getting better all the time." On the current KISS lineup: "The fans don't seem too happy ... What KISS is doing right now reminds me of like what some great fighters have done in the past when they come out of retirement, when they should have just rolled up the towel. That's the way it seems to me now. It's getting embarrassing." Read the complete interview here.

A former member of highly influential but vastly underrated Bay Area bands the Loved Ones, Mover, and Dave Gleason’s Wasted Days, Mike Therieau is an Oakland-based singer-songwriter who blasts passion through his own bluesy, old-school country flavored songs like "Fly Away." His raw voice evokes the Small Faces’ Steve Marriott (with the haircut to match), but it’s his bleak, contemplative mood that carries the music.—Aidin Vaziri

Now that Velvet Revolver's future is uncertain, are Man Raze poised to become the newest rock supergroup? Who knows? Sounds pretty good to us though. Blabbermouth.net is reporting that Phil Collen of Def Leppard, Simon Laffy of Girl, and Paul Cook of the Sex Pistols have paired to form Man Raze, which will release their debut album Surreal on June 3 in the States. "The fun part about Man Raze is that musically we can go off in any direction from rock to alternative," frontman Collen has said. "We go from really hard rock, with obviously big guitars, to dub. I was always into the alternative stuff, a very big fan of the Police. And this is edgy—a lot more aggressive than Def Leppard."

Beginning today Coldplay are giving fans a one-week-only chance to download the first track, "Violet Hill," from their forthcoming album Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends. The marketing push appears to be an effective one, as Billboard is reporting that the Coldplay site performed sluggishly when a reporter tried to acquire the download today. When obtaining the free download, Gibson experienced no such delay. Fans wishing to get the free download must visit Coldplay's website, click on "Song," and enter an email address and postal code. The free download is then sent to the email address in a zip file and will expire within six hours of first opening it. The album will be available in full on June 12 and is the first LP for the band since 2005's X&Y, which proved to be the best selling album of that year. Viva La Vida has been described as a departure from Coldplay's previous albums.
