The British metal men of the Darkness are back with a hard-hitting new album, Pinewood Smile, out this month, and a fresh North American tour. The trek sets off on March 28, 2018, in Los Angeles, California, and takes the guys through a May 2 show in Dallas, Texas.

If you catch the guys on tour, you'll see bass player Frankie Poullain slinging his trusty Gibson Thunderbird IV. We caught up with Poullain for a quick interview right as the new album was dropping.

Frankie-Poullain by Simon Emmett

On what words he would use to describe the musical direction of Pinewood Smile: "Monstrous Incoherent Mishmash."

On some good advice he got once from an Aerosmith rocker: "As Steven Tyler said when I asked him how he managed to stay looking so young - 'Just good moisturiser maaan.'"

On what he remembers from his first gig with the Darkness: "Camden Monarch, August 2000. (We) ended with our Christmas single B-side, 'I Love You 5 Times.' My hands were shaking."

On why he rocks the Gibson Thunderbird IV: "Awkward - check. Long fragile neck - check. Unbalanced - check. And yet strangely seductive - check. Me in a nutshell."

On the best advice he can offer aspiring musicians trying to make music for a living: "Don't make it for a living, make it for love."
