Bob Dylan was the most popular folk artist in America in 1965 when he outgrew his original solo acoustic sound and cut the landmark album Highway 61 Revisited. Then he started a revolution. And he fired the first shot at the famous Newport Folk Festival on July 25, when he brought the electric band that played on that album – including the legendary guitarist Michael Bloomfield – to its stage.

Recorded mostly in the south of France, the music on Exile on Main St. reflected the loose spirit of the band’s environment. “We brought a lot of stuff to Nellcote that had been incubating for a while,” writes Keith Richards, in Life, his autobiography. “I would farm out the title or the idea … come up with a couple of new songs a day. And one would work and one wouldn’t. Mick kept up with the writing at this phenomenal pace—very canny rock and roll lyrics.... Most of what I had to do was to come up with riffs and ideas that would turn Mick on.”
