Recorded mostly in the south of France, the music on Exile on Main St. reflected the loose spirit of the band’s environment. “We brought a lot of stuff to Nellcote that had been incubating for a while,” writes Keith Richards, in Life, his autobiography. “I would farm out the title or the idea … come up with a couple of new songs a day. And one would work and one wouldn’t. Mick kept up with the writing at this phenomenal pace—very canny rock and roll lyrics.... Most of what I had to do was to come up with riffs and ideas that would turn Mick on.”
