Friday night (Oct. 23) New Jersey natives and folk-punk rockers The Gaslight Anthem delivered a blistering set at Nashville’s Mercy Lounge. Opening their show with the song “High Lonesome,” singer Brian Fallon sent the capacity crowd into a frenzy with the Counting Crows quoted lyric “Maria came from Nashville with a suitcase in her hand.” Gaslight followed with about 18 more fist-pumping songs of blue-collar heartbreak, performing nearly every song from their critically acclaimed sophomore release The ’59 Sound.

As many may already know, The Gaslight Anthem have amassed a pile of critical praise since releasing The ’59 Sound, and earlier this year Bruce Springsteen joined his fellow Garden State rockers on-stage at Glastonbury Festival, and London’s Hard Rock Calling, where “The Boss” was seen donning a Gibson Les Paul Junior. Frontman Brian Fallon cites early Springsteen as a key influence in his songwriting, and watching The Gaslight Anthem is a bit like watching a young Springsteen on at least six shots of Cuervo.

For the Nashville show, Fallon played a 2009 Les Paul Traditional as well as his ’56 Les Paul Goldtop he’s been using for most of the tour. Lead guitarist Alex Rosamilia donned a brand new Vintage Sunburst Les Paul Traditional Pro for the entire set. The discriminating Nashville audience gave the band a lot of love, and Fallon responded by offering a heartfelt promise to return more often. When they do, it’ll no doubt be in larger venues.

The Gaslight Anthem will perform their final show of The ’59 Sound tour on December 11 in Montclair, NJ before heading back into the studio to record their anxiously awaited third full-length record.
