Sunday at the Newport Folk Festival on the Rhode Island coast, artists such as Emmylou Harris, Alejandro Escovedo, and Amos Lee brought to the stage a trove of Gibson acoustics. Throughout the weekend, nearly 8,000 audience members turned up to witness the festival’s heady lineup of artists, all connected loosely by their common fondness for folk music.
Performing a number of songs from his eighth and most recent release, Alejandro Escovedo produced his Gibson Southern Jumbo for a set that dazzled both longtime followers and first-timers. That same day folk singer Emmylou Harris performed with a Gibson J-200, and pop star Amos Lee opted for an SJ-100. Both artists, disparate styles notwithstanding, proved that folk may be one of the oldest forms of music, but that is still very much current.
