Sir Paul McCartney visited the Gibson GuitarTown London charity exhibition to sign his 10 foot Gibson Les Paul guitar

07.22.2008

The unique 10 foot Gibson Les Paul guitar has been an integral part of the Gibson Guitartown London charity campaign, which has been on public display around More London, South Bank, SE1 by City Hall for the past ten weeks. Following the display which officially comes down today, Sir Paul McCartney’s signed guitar along with 60 other specially hand painted 10 foot Gibson Les Paul’s and regular sized Gibson SG guitars will be auctioned off to raise money for The Prince’s Trust, Teenage Cancer Trust and Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy at an auction event in Central London later this year.

Sir Paul McCartney said: "I just fancied playing with a big guitar! I think this one will hopefully catch the imagination of the public and whoever is going to buy it at the auction and raise money for The Prince's Trust, Teenage Cancer Trust and Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy- which are all great charities."

Visual artist Rosie Brooks added: "It's a complete honour. It's brilliant. I was really touched when I found out he had chosen my design."

All the giant guitars have all been individually and creatively hand painted by many acclaimed visual artists such as Sir Peter Blake, Andrew Logan and Gerald Scarfe and signed by household name British musicians such as Noel Gallagher, Robert Plant, Paul Weller, Brian May, Ozzy Osbourne, Mark Knopfler, Rod Stewart, Keane, Stereophonics, James Blunt, Razorlight, KT Tunstall, New Order, Magic Numbers, Graham Coxon, Gallows, Kasabian, The Kooks, Dirty Pretty Things and a Tribute to Les Paul guitar to name a few.

A further 30 regular sized Gibson SG guitars were also on public display around The O2 in Greenwich during the summer months and signed by leading musicians such as Ronnie Wood, Slash, The View, Kaiser Chiefs, Depeche Mode, Mark Ronson, Lemmy and Corinne Bailey Rae to name a few which will also go under the hammer at the charity auction in November.

Sir Paul McCartney has been busy promoting his latest studio album “Memory Almost Full” which saw the great man perform at a number of intimate venues such as at The Electric Ballroom in Camden and at The ICA as part of the itunes festival. Sir Paul has also just announced a date at London’s Roundhouse as part of the BBC Electric Proms concerts being held on October 25th 2007, tickets sold out in record time.
