This is a compelling and rarely taught – or even acknowledged –guitar style that I absolutely love. When it comes to guitar accompaniment, this particular arpeggio style represents true restraint, taste and emotion. It is a technique that has almost always been part of “soul” guitar playing, as created by players such as Steve Cropper, Bobby Womack and Cornell Dupree, and many other Motown artists.

This funk style is all about the touch. The pinched-pick style that helps create the overtones is so critical to this sound, and the attack is all about digging in with that right hand approach.

This is one of the most unusual finds I’ve ever come across, slide or otherwise, when it comes to a certain key being “just right” within the context of what we are playing and experimenting with.

This style, most often associated with Jimi Hendrix, Cornell Dupree, and Steve Cropper, consists of harmony notes played in many cases using slides, as well as hammer-ons and pull-offs.

Open G is one very flexible tuning, and the possibilities for slide players are endless. The open positions offer a great deal of open harmonies for that very Dobro-like effect so often employed by players such as Ry Cooder, Lowell George, Bonnie Raitt and Lee Roy Parnell. They also, however, require a good deal of slide accuracy.
