This is an important subject. Too many guitar players fall into ruts or bad habits when they get all-too familiar with licks that they play almost with no thought involved. This is what starts to happen with the mundane and plain old “turnaround” licks so many are guilty of overplaying.

The combination of shapes and scales on the guitar is probably the single most important tool to the improviser. Even when I first taught myself these kinds of positions, I was not yet truly aware of the fact that I was essentially creating a “double-exposure” of scale positions that could be easily taught.

The harmonic “raking” technique is rarely shown, and it relates most to the old-time jazz styles of such greats as Tal Farlow, Joe Pass, Les Paul, and many others.
