When one starts to utilize the various pentatonic scales, it becomes quite apparent that after awhile certain “outside” or “passing” notes become necessary to stretch these scales and their potential. What happens is there is a whole new array of licks and phrases that are born out of these notes being added, and the possibilities are endless.
In this lesson, I will show you first the key notes and where they exist on the fretboard, in both open and closed positions. I will then show you a few “starter” licks to really get you feeling what it’s like to phrase having these new notes at your disposal.
You’ll find this to be an invaluable lesson, and one that will lead to more and more improvisational possibilities for you. It can’t help but make you a better player!—Arlen Roth
